Silver City, New Mexico got some much deserved publicity this month in the publication Mother Earth News. The article starts:
In order to thrive, most towns need just two things: creative residents with good ideas and a responsive local government that clears barriers and offers support for those ideas to bear fruit. (Read the article.)
I personally couldn't agree more. In fact, I went to the Local Builders Association Meeting last night and we stood around and talked about how much we loved Silver City and what persuaded us to move here. One person said, "Silver City has all of the things that you can't recreate in a place: wonderful weather, great water, clean air and we're surrounded by the wilderness." He's right. In addition, we have a strong community of people who are proactive and progressive thinking when it comes to working together and making things happen to better our city, county, region and environment in general. Whether it's planning cultural arts and music events, creating community gardens and walking trails, bringing in grant money for social and medical programs, or providing schools that allow our kids to learn about sustainable living, we have it all here--in abundance!. (Note: links just represent one example - I have more if you'd like to contact me.) |

People often compare Silver City to how Santa Fe or Taos was thirty years ago. The truth is, Silver City is it's own unique place, very different from the rest of New Mexico. In many ways it's a traditional, Victorian, mining town. However, the population is culturally diverse and the city is poised on the verge of change, discovery and excitement. Not to mention, the remote location keeps traffic low and the town is surrounded by millions of acres of protected, untouched wilderness. |
